Frequently asked questions
What does this calculator estimate?
It estimates the all-in cost to run a prompt evaluation program: inference tokens across variants and runs, evaluator costs (LLM-as-judge, human review, rubric, or managed platform), and human review labor.
How are variants counted?
Each variant is a distinct prompt version, system message, or few-shot example set. Total test runs = variants ร runs per variant. Each run consumes the input and output tokens you set.
What is cached input?
A percentage of each prompt's input tokens that are repeated across runs and eligible for provider prompt-cache discounts. Some providers offer 50% off cached input tokens.
Which evaluator is cheapest?
Rules/rubric scorers are free but limited. LLM-as-judge with a cheap model is usually the lowest-cost scalable option. Human review is the most expensive per run but necessary for safety and policy checks. Managed platforms charge per-record fees that can add up quickly.
Should I include setup time?
Yes. Designing test sets, writing eval rubrics, and triaging failures are real costs. Enter your hourly rate and estimated hours to see the fully-loaded test budget.
How often should I run prompt regression tests?
Run a lean sanity check before every deploy, a full regression weekly or bi-weekly, and targeted red-team batches after any model or policy change.
Prices are approximate per-token list rates as of mid-2026. Managed evaluation platforms may charge per-record or per-run rather than per-token; treat results as directional for budgeting.
